Lorsque Paul et Marilyn Koch, un couple d\u2019Ottawa, ont entrepris de r\u00e9viser leurs testaments en 2014 \u00ab Cet endroit m\u2019a litt\u00e9ralement sauv\u00e9 la vie \u00bb, dit Paul, qui, avec son \u00e9pouse, s\u2019implique comme b\u00e9n\u00e9vole et donateur aupr\u00e8s de maintes causes et organisations.<\/span><\/p>

La d\u00e9cision des Koch tire en grande partie ses origines de ce jour de 2009 o\u00f9 leur vie a bascul\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019angle des rues Carling et Bronson.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Au retour d\u2019un repas au restaurant pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer leur anniversaire de mariage, Paul ressent un malaise qu\u2019il attribue d\u2019abord \u00e0 des exc\u00e8s de table. Le lendemain matin par contre, les sympt\u00f4mes sont toujours l\u00e0. Paul se met \u00e0 chercher des r\u00e9ponses sur Internet. Il pense que sa hernie hiatale, dont les sympt\u00f4mes s\u2019apparentent \u00e0 ceux d\u2019une crise cardiaque, est peut-\u00eatre en cause. Mais lorsqu\u2019il commence \u00e0 ressentir un picotement dans le bras, sa femme et lui comprennent rapidement que la crise cardiaque est imminente.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Ils auraient d\u00fb composer le 911; ils sautent plut\u00f4t dans la voiture. Marilyn est au volant. Ils partent de Hunt Club et se dirigent vers le Civic. Au coin de Bronson et Carling, Paul se met \u00e0 ressentir d\u2019intenses douleurs \u00e0 la poitrine. D\u00e8s qu\u2019ils arrivent \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital, il se pr\u00e9cipite hors de la voiture et court \u00e0 l\u2019urgence o\u00f9 il s\u2019\u00e9crie\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Je pense que je fais une crise cardiaque!\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>

En quelques minutes, on l\u2019am\u00e8ne \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie. \u00c0 peine une heure plus tard, il est d\u00e9j\u00e0 sur la table d\u2019op\u00e9ration. Son art\u00e8re interventriculaire int\u00e9rieure est compl\u00e8tement bouch\u00e9e. On lui installe une endoproth\u00e8se, puis il passe quatre jours \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie pour reprendre des forces. \u00ab\u00a0Deux semaines plus tard, je faisais un 18 trous de golf en marchant \u00bb, dit aujourd\u2019hui Paul pour t\u00e9moigner de la qualit\u00e9 des soins re\u00e7us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

La vie de Paul et Marilyn Koch est, sous bien des angles, une vie pass\u00e9e au service de la communaut\u00e9. Mari et femme sont depuis toujours des champions du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat et de la collecte de fonds. Aujourd\u2019hui retrait\u00e9s, ils continuent d\u2019appuyer chaque ann\u00e9e une vingtaine d\u2019organismes d\u2019ici et d\u2019ailleurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Inspir\u00e9 par son p\u00e8re, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sident du conseil d\u2019urbanisme de la Ville de Guelph dans les ann\u00e9es 1940, Paul, qui a grandi \u00e0 Guelph, fait du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat depuis qu\u2019il est tout jeune. \u00ab\u00a0Mon p\u00e8re \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s engag\u00e9 socialement. Il m\u2019a toujours encourag\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler au service de ma communaut\u00e9, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire \u00e0 donner mon temps comme b\u00e9n\u00e9vole et \u00e0 \u00eatre aussi g\u00e9n\u00e9reux que possible sur le plan philanthropique.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>

Au fil du temps et des d\u00e9placements, Paul, qui d\u00e9tient un dipl\u00f4me d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Waterloo, a travaill\u00e9 comme b\u00e9n\u00e9vole aupr\u00e8s de maints organismes de Burlington, de Sarnia, de North York et, enfin, d\u2019Ottawa, o\u00f9 il s\u2019est \u00e9tabli de fa\u00e7on permanente avec Marilyn dans les ann\u00e9es 1980 apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 transf\u00e9r\u00e9 dans cette ville par IBM, son employeur.<\/span><\/p>

Paul avait l\u2019habitude, pendant ses ann\u00e9es \u00e0 IBM, d\u2019appeler ses coll\u00e8gues pour leur demander de donner \u00e0 diverses causes. \u00ab\u00a0Souvent, quand j\u2019appelais, la personne me demandait : \u201c\u00c0 qui tu veux que je donne de l\u2019argent cette fois-ci?\u201d\u00a0\u00bb, se rappelle-t-il en riant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nombreux sont les organismes d\u2019Ottawa qui ont b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 des efforts de Paul, dont l\u2019Orchestre symphonique d\u2019Ottawa, la Fondation de l\u2019h\u00f4pital Riverside (aujourd\u2019hui la Fondation OutCare), EnviroCentre, le Comit\u00e9 consultatif de la Ville d\u2019Ottawa sur l\u2019environnement, l\u2019Ottawa Sustainability Fund de la Fondation communautaire d\u2019Ottawa et, tout r\u00e9cemment, l\u2019Omnium f\u00e9minin Canadien Pacifique de la LPGA, dont il pr\u00e9side le comit\u00e9 \u00e9cologique.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Paul et Marilyn profitent de leur retraite pour voyager et jouer au golf, mais sont loin d\u2019avoir renonc\u00e9 \u00e0 leurs activit\u00e9s b\u00e9n\u00e9voles. \u00ab\u00a0Le b\u00e9n\u00e9volat, c\u2019est une fa\u00e7on de nous tenir occup\u00e9s et de nous donner l\u2019impression d\u2019\u00eatre utiles\u00a0\u00bb, dit Paul. Le sourire aux l\u00e8vres, il ajoute\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0On ne sait plus o\u00f9 on prenait le temps d\u2019aller travailler!\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>

Chaque ann\u00e9e depuis la crise cardiaque de Paul en 2009, le couple fait un don annuel qu\u2019IBM bonifie de 50\u00a0% par l\u2019entremise d\u2019un programme de dons proportionnels pour les retrait\u00e9s. Alors, quand les Koch ont entrepris de rouvrir leurs testaments en 2014, il leur semblait naturel d\u2019y inclure un don \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie pour soutenir les priorit\u00e9s \u00e0 long terme de l\u2019\u00e9tablissement. \u00ab\u00a0L\u2019Institut de cardiologie fait tellement du bon travail, nous allons aussi poursuivre nos dons annuels\u00a0\u00bb, dit Paul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00ab\u00a0Je dois beaucoup \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie, poursuit-il. Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 si chanceux!\u00a0\u00bb Les Koch ont toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 au service des autres. Leur h\u00e9ritage le sera aussi, ce dont l\u2019Institut de cardiologie leur sera \u00e9ternellement reconnaissant.<\/span><\/p>
