Sandales \u00e0 semelle plate-forme. Sabots. Talons compens\u00e9s. Mules. Charles\u00a0IX en cuir verni. Qu\u2019ont en commun toutes ces chaussures? <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1970, elles faisaient toutes partie des nouvelles tendances de la mode, et Gerry \u00ab\u00a0la l\u00e9gende\u00a0\u00bb Taylor les vendait jour apr\u00e8s jour en tant que l\u2019un des plus jeunes dirigeants de l\u2019histoire de la Brown Shoe Company, entreprise familiale canadienne bien-aim\u00e9e qui a marqu\u00e9 son \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n

La fille de Gerry, Carole, se rappelle avec tendresse qu\u2019elle aidait son p\u00e8re au si\u00e8ge social de l\u2019entreprise pendant les week-ends quand elle \u00e9tait petite. Elle avait la m\u00eame pointure que les \u00e9chantillons et pouvait donc essayer toutes les merveilleuses chaussures, comme Cendrillon.<\/p>\n

Gerry travaillait souvent de longues heures, m\u00eame les jours f\u00e9ri\u00e9s et les fins de semaine. Malgr\u00e9 son horaire charg\u00e9, il s\u2019organisait toujours pour donner la priorit\u00e9 \u00e0 ses enfants. Ceux-ci se rappellent encore tr\u00e8s bien leur joie quand il leur rapportait de d\u00e9licieux chocolats de ses multiples voyages d\u2019affaires aux \u00c9tats-Unis, comme la tablette Payday.<\/p>\n

La prise de conscience de Gerry<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gerry a souffert de br\u00fblements d\u2019estomac et de douleurs thoraciques pendant des ann\u00e9es. Il avait rel\u00e9gu\u00e9 sa sant\u00e9 au second plan. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, on en savait moins sur la sant\u00e9 cardiaque, mais quand deux de ses amis proches sont d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9s d\u2019une crise cardiaque, il a finalement demand\u00e9 de l\u2019aide \u00e0 son m\u00e9decin de famille.<\/p>\n

Gerry a aussit\u00f4t \u00e9t\u00e9 dirig\u00e9 au nouvel Institut de cardiologie d\u2019Ottawa pour subir une angiographie, qui a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 qu\u2019il avait trois art\u00e8res coronaires bouch\u00e9es. L\u2019une d\u2019elles \u00e9tait compl\u00e8tement obstru\u00e9e en raison de son travail extr\u00eamement stressant et de ses habitudes de vie. En f\u00e9vrier 1982, il subissait avec succ\u00e8s un quadruple pontage. Gr\u00e2ce aux bons soins du Dr<\/sup>\u00a0Wilbert Keon, cofondateur de l\u2019Institut, ce fier p\u00e8re et homme d\u2019affaires obtenait son cong\u00e9 de l\u2019h\u00f4pital huit jours plus tard. En mai de la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, il \u00e9tait de retour au travail.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 la suite de son op\u00e9ration, les habitudes de vie de Gerry se sont radicalement am\u00e9lior\u00e9es, et ce, gr\u00e2ce au soutien de sa femme ador\u00e9e, Marg. Il a imm\u00e9diatement cess\u00e9 de fumer, et il s\u2019est mis \u00e0 marcher et \u00e0 se reposer tous les jours, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 manger des repas bien \u00e9quilibr\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Gerry et Marg\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marg et Gerry se sont \u00e9pris l\u2019un de l\u2019autre d\u00e8s le tout d\u00e9but. Gerry d\u00e9butait sa carri\u00e8re en vente \u00e0 Calgary lorsqu\u2019il a aper\u00e7u cette \u00ab\u00a0belle du Sud\u00a0\u00bb, qui allait devenir sa partenaire de vie.<\/p>\n

Marg, une enfant unique, \u00e9tait fi\u00e8re d\u2019\u00eatre devenue une supermaman. Sa fille Karen se rappelle avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 dorlot\u00e9e par une m\u00e8re aimante. Quand elle devait s\u2019absenter de l\u2019\u00e9cole parce qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait malade, Karen se blottissait sur le canap\u00e9 avec une bouillotte, des collations et une couverture, tandis que sa m\u00e8re repassait les v\u00eatements de la famille en regardant ses t\u00e9l\u00e9romans pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Gerry et Marg ont \u00e9lev\u00e9 quatre enfants\u00a0: Don, Lori, Carole et Karen. Ils ont eu la chance de voir grandir leurs sept petits-enfants et d\u2019assister \u00e0 la naissance de leur premi\u00e8re arri\u00e8re-petite-fille.<\/p>\n

Ensemble, ils ont v\u00e9cu pleinement leur vie, entre autres en voyageant \u00e0 travers le monde pendant pr\u00e8s de 20\u00a0ans. Ils ont pu profiter de ce sursis gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019intervention chirurgicale et aux excellents soins de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de l\u2019Institut de cardiologie de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Ottawa.<\/p>\n

L\u2019Institut et les \u00e9preuves familiales<\/strong><\/p>\n

En 2005, alors qu\u2019il jouait au golf sur l\u2019\u00eele d\u2019Anna Maria, en Floride, Gerry a subi ce qu\u2019il croyait \u00eatre une petite crise cardiaque. Il s\u2019est alors empress\u00e9 de revenir au Canada pour se faire soigner \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie, o\u00f9 il a subi une deuxi\u00e8me op\u00e9ration cardiaque \u00e0 c\u0153ur ouvert (triple pontage), r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par le Dr<\/sup> Fraser Rubens. Malheureusement, malgr\u00e9 cette seconde intervention chirurgicale r\u00e9ussie, la maladie cardiaque a continu\u00e9 de tourmenter Gerry et Marg.<\/p>\n

La vie est parfois complexe et remplie de d\u00e9fis. Peu apr\u00e8s sa seconde op\u00e9ration, Gerry et sa famille ont v\u00e9cu plusieurs pertes en un court laps de temps. Gerry a perdu l\u2019amour de sa vie, Marg, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 emport\u00e9e par un cancer, puis sa fille a\u00een\u00e9e, Lori, d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e tragiquement \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 47 ans. Son fils, Don, atteint d\u2019une maladie du c\u0153ur, s\u2019est \u00e9galement \u00e9teint \u00e0 50\u00a0ans.<\/p>\n

La maladie cardiaque a souvent une composante g\u00e9n\u00e9tique et h\u00e9r\u00e9ditaire. Carole, l\u2019une des filles de Gerry et Marg, est aussi trait\u00e9e pour des probl\u00e8mes de c\u0153ur. <\/strong>En 2014, elle a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que quelque chose clochait avec son c\u0153ur. La douleur intense qu\u2019elle ressentait lui donnait l\u2019impression d\u2019avoir \u00ab\u00a0un \u00e9l\u00e9phant sur la poitrine\u00a0\u00bb. Cette sensation lui coupait le souffle et l\u2019emp\u00eachait de promener ses chiens. Elle a alors d\u00e9couvert qu\u2019elle souffrait elle aussi d\u2019une maladie du c\u0153ur et d\u2019un blocage cardiaque. Depuis qu\u2019elle a re\u00e7u une endoproth\u00e8se cardiaque, Carole peut continuer \u00e0 profiter de sa vie bien remplie d\u2019enseignante.<\/p>\n

L\u2019origine de la l\u00e9gende<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gerry, issu d\u2019un milieu modeste de Saskatoon, en Saskatchewan, a toujours eu le d\u00e9sir et la d\u00e9termination de r\u00e9ussir en tant qu\u2019athl\u00e8te, puis homme d\u2019affaires. Il a commenc\u00e9 au bas de l\u2019\u00e9chelle comme vendeur de chaussures, gravi tous les \u00e9chelons et atteint le sommet de l\u2019industrie aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de contemporains et amis, comme John Eaton, pr\u00e9sident fondateur de la cha\u00eene de grands magasins Eaton. Des d\u00e9cennies plus tard, ses petits-fils le surnommeront affectueusement \u00ab\u00a0La l\u00e9gende\u00a0\u00bb. Ceux-ci s\u2019\u00e9merveillaient devant le dynamisme et la passion de leur grand-p\u00e8re, qui aimait blaguer et jouer au yo-yo avec sa famille, et qui enchantait aussi les enfants qui visitaient la manufacture principale de la Brown Shoe Company \u00e0 Perth, en Ontario.<\/p>\n

Un h\u00e9ritage empreint de compassion aux g\u00e9n\u00e9rations \u00e0 venir<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gerry Taylor a laiss\u00e9 deux h\u00e9ritages importants. D\u2019abord, sa contribution \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de la chaussure et de la mode au Canada.<\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 tout \u00e0 la fois pr\u00e9sident de la Brown\u2019s Shoe Company et vice-pr\u00e9sident de sa filiale am\u00e9ricaine Buster Browns\u00a0(aujourd\u2019hui Caleres), premier d\u00e9taillant nord-am\u00e9ricain \u00e0 importer des chaussures fabriqu\u00e9es en Italie au Canada, un endroit que beaucoup croyaient indiff\u00e9rent \u00e0 la mode.<\/p>\n

Son succ\u00e8s en affaires s\u2019explique par le lien qu\u2019il parvenait \u00e0 cr\u00e9er avec toute sa client\u00e8le, leur offrant sourire, exp\u00e9rience agr\u00e9able et chaussures de qualit\u00e9. Il a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 faire de l\u2019entreprise ce qu\u2019elle est devenue\u00a0: un d\u00e9taillant de chaussures comptant 67\u00a0magasins \u00e0 travers le Canada.<\/p>\n

Gerry et Marg ont toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnaissants pour les soins avant-gardistes et empreints de compassion offerts \u00e0 Gerry \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie. C\u2019est pourquoi ils ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de faire un don testamentaire transformateur et de laisser ainsi un h\u00e9ritage durable. De petits gestes peuvent faire toute la diff\u00e9rence dans une vie, tout comme les chocolats que Gerry offrait \u00e0 ses enfants et qui restent \u00e0 jamais grav\u00e9s dans leur m\u00e9moire.<\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 la d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration de son \u00e9tat de sant\u00e9, Gerry a eu la chance de vivre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 88 ans, avant de s\u2019\u00e9teindre en 2018. Il a pu profiter de plusieurs ann\u00e9es avec ses filles, ses petits-enfants et ses arri\u00e8re-petits-enfants. Karen, devenue infirmi\u00e8re, a pu aider son p\u00e8re lors de ses rendez-vous m\u00e9dicaux. Carole, elle, adore les chaussures jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce jour parce qu\u2019elles lui rappellent son p\u00e8re. Et chaque ann\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019anniversaire de naissance de Gerry, le 2 ao\u00fbt, les membres de sa famille se rassemblent \u00e0 leur chalet pour comm\u00e9morer la vie de cet homme aim\u00e9 de tous et toutes.<\/p>\n

Comme un petit caillou qui fait des ricochets dans l\u2019eau, des milliers de patients et patientes ressentiront l\u2019impact de l\u2019acte de bienveillance destin\u00e9e aux prochaines g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de Gerry et Marg Taylor, deux personnes tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9ciales.
