Nous habitions tout pr\u00e8s de la Mission Ramakrishna, un organisme caritatif r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour son travail exceptionnel. Sa mission et ses activit\u00e9s \u00e9taient en partie financ\u00e9es par le gouvernement et en grande partie par des dons.<\/p>\n<p>Mes parents \u00e9taient profond\u00e9ment touch\u00e9s par le travail de cet organisme, et moi aussi. Je trouvais que ces gens faisaient un travail formidable et je voulais m&rsquo;associer \u00e0 eux. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, ils acceptaient des \u00e9tudiants en soins infirmiers, ce qui a \u00e9veill\u00e9 mon int\u00e9r\u00eat.<\/p>\n<p>Plus tard, j&rsquo;ai v\u00e9cu et travaill\u00e9 \u00e0 Calcutta avant de me joindre au National Health Service au Royaume-Uni, o\u00f9 je me suis sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e en sant\u00e9 publique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qu\u2019est-ce qui continue de vous inspirer dans votre travail? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but de ma carri\u00e8re, quand je suis arriv\u00e9e au Canada, j&rsquo;ai travaill\u00e9 dans une unit\u00e9 de traumatologie c\u00e9r\u00e9brale en Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>J&rsquo;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 profond\u00e9ment touch\u00e9e par les patients et patientes qui n\u00e9cessitaient des soins constants en raison de traumatismes cr\u00e2niens et de tumeurs. C\u2019est toutefois l&rsquo;amour de leurs familles qui m&rsquo;a le plus marqu\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>J&rsquo;ai vu leurs proches leur rendre visite et les entourer d\u2019amour dans des situations tr\u00e8s p\u00e9nibles.<\/p>\n<p>Ils les embrassaient, leur t\u00e9moignaient leur affection malgr\u00e9 les difficult\u00e9s, souvent submerg\u00e9s par l&rsquo;\u00e9motion. \u00c7a m\u2019a fait r\u00e9aliser \u00e0 quel point nos conflits quotidiens peuvent \u00eatre insignifiants. M\u00eame dans le pire moment de leur vie, ces patients \u00e9taient entour\u00e9s d&rsquo;amour et de compassion, ce qui montre bien \u00e0 quel point chaque instant est pr\u00e9cieux. \u00c7a m\u2019a donn\u00e9 une nouvelle perspective sur ce qui compte dans la vie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Que se passe-t-il au bloc op\u00e9ratoire?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pour bien des gens, les op\u00e9rations cardiaques sont un myst\u00e8re. Les patients nous arrivent souvent tr\u00e8s anxieux devant l\u2019ampleur de l&rsquo;intervention. Or, nous avons une \u00e9quipe incroyable pour prendre soin d\u2019eux, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement compos\u00e9e de huit \u00e0 dix professionnels de diff\u00e9rentes disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Compte tenu de la formation, des comp\u00e9tences et de l&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience des membres de notre \u00e9quipe, nos patients sont entre de tr\u00e8s bonnes mains.<\/p>\n<p>Je veux qu\u2019ils sachent que leur \u00e9quipe est hautement qualifi\u00e9e, professionnelle et d\u00e9vou\u00e9e \u00e0 leurs soins. De plus, nous sommes bien pr\u00e9par\u00e9s pour faire face \u00e0 toute urgence. Si vous avez \u00e0 c\u0153ur d\u2019aider les gens, vous \u00eates \u00e0 la bonne place, car les patients sont tr\u00e8s \u00e0 l&rsquo;aise avec les infirmi\u00e8res. Le meilleur moment de ma journ\u00e9e, c&rsquo;est de les voir s\u2019asseoir quelques minutes apr\u00e8s l\u2019intervention, se sentant visiblement beaucoup mieux, apr\u00e8s \u00eatre arriv\u00e9s dans un \u00e9tat critique au laboratoire. Je ne m&rsquo;en lasse jamais.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parlez-moi de vos coll\u00e8gues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nous avons une \u00e9quipe multidisciplinaire, ce que j\u2019adore. Ce n\u2019est pas tr\u00e8s courant, pour une infirmi\u00e8re, d\u2019avoir des amis m\u00e9decins, techniciens en radiologie ou inhaloth\u00e9rapeutes. Ici, tout le monde se conna\u00eet et se croise dans les couloirs, ce qui cr\u00e9e une ambiance tr\u00e8s familiale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Est-ce agr\u00e9able de travailler \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de cardiologie de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Ottawa?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La direction fait vraiment de son mieux pour assurer notre bien-\u00eatre. Notre m\u00e9tier n\u2019est pas facile, mais l&rsquo;Institut nous soutient et s&rsquo;efforce de nous donner tout ce dont nous avons besoin. Il est important de faire preuve d\u2019indulgence envers soi-m\u00eame pendant la p\u00e9riode d&rsquo;apprentissage. Beaucoup de nouvelles infirmi\u00e8res qui \u00e9taient des expertes dans leur domaine doivent repartir de z\u00e9ro lorsqu&rsquo;elles arrivent ici. C\u2019est un milieu de soins compl\u00e8tement diff\u00e9rent, mais une fois que vous avez pris vos marques et que vous avez compris comment r\u00e9agir aux situations, c&rsquo;est un travail vraiment formidable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qu\u2019est-ce qui vous a amen\u00e9e \u00e0 choisir la profession infirmi\u00e8re?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>J&rsquo;ai toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 passionn\u00e9e par la biologie et les soins de sant\u00e9, et je tenais \u00e0 aider les autres. Au d\u00e9part, j&rsquo;ai envisag\u00e9 de devenir enseignante ou de travailler en kin\u00e9siologie ou en physioth\u00e9rapie. J&rsquo;ai toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s attir\u00e9e par le travail avec le public, d&rsquo;autant plus que le c\u0153ur me fascine.<\/p>\n<p>Quand j&rsquo;\u00e9tais jeune, ma grand-m\u00e8re a subi une op\u00e9ration intestinale et plusieurs membres de ma famille ont eu des probl\u00e8mes cardiaques. C&rsquo;est int\u00e9ressant de discuter avec des proches de leurs exp\u00e9riences. C\u2019est comme les tuteurs (<em>stents<\/em>)\u00a0: tout le monde a une histoire \u00e0 raconter. Et comme tout le monde a un c\u0153ur, je pense que ce domaine est essentiel et qu&rsquo;il ne dispara\u00eetra pas de sit\u00f4t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment d\u00e9cririez-vous la formation n\u00e9cessaire?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;est tr\u00e8s complexe. \u00c7a commence par le lavage des mains et \u00e7a se termine par la pr\u00e9paration de valves \u00e0 40 000 $. Il y a beaucoup de choses \u00e0 faire entre les deux, et \u00e7a demande un haut niveau d\u2019expertise.
