At the tail end of summer—and just before launching our JUMP IN™ for Women’s Heart Health campaign—Tony and I flew to NYC to catch Day 2 of the US Open, the final chapter of my 50th birthday extravaganza.
The US Open is unlike any other sporting event. In those opening days, the entire campus buzzes with energy. With 22 courts in full swing, you’re not just watching tennis, you’re in it. We watched warm-ups, practice sessions, early round matches, and checked off players we’d hoped to see. We also did a lot of people watching – an international parade of fans, all sipping the iconic Honey Deuce cocktails and soaking in the spectacle. Every serve, rally, and cheer felt like a celebration of grit and grace. It was awesome.
The real drama, however, came on the way home at Penn Station.
Somewhere between the purchase of our train tickets to the airport, running with carry-ons and settling into our seats- my phone vanished. My phone case holds my credit cards as well as my ID. Here I was, in one of the busiest transit hubs in the world without a device that never leaves my side. Quick thinking had Tony and I jump off the train to retrace my steps in a blur of panic and hope. Each second felt like an hour as I sprinted from the platform back to the ticket office with hopes I had left it there. I hadn’t.
So, with my stomach churning and the sweat building I resigned myself to making my way back to Tony empty handed. Tony, however, was waving me down as he had called my phone and miraculously someone, an angel named Andre, had answered. He promised to wait for me at the ticket office. I sprinted back upstairs calling out his name with hopes I might still catch the train on its last call.
The sweat and the adrenaline pouring in, I soon realized there were two ticket offices, one on 7th and the other on 8th Avenue, which meant more running while calling out Andre’s name. “You must be Lianne!” he said as I ran towards him flooded with relief. I gave this stranger, dressed in a transit station uniform, a hug. He hadn’t found it himself, someone else had, and trusted him enough to pass it along. I didn’t get a selfie with Andre, but this is my thank-you to the universe—and to the two strangers who chose kindness. I am truly grateful for your actions on that day.
By the time we boarded the next train, I was drenched, flustered, and grateful. I had sprinted, climbed stairs and faced a mental challenge. But I was healthy, I was mobile, and I was reminded of something powerful – to be present, move with intention and take care of the things that matter.
Which brings me to this month’s challenge…❤️ JUMP IN™ for Women’s Heart Health.
It has been an incredibly busy start to the month, but our Foundation team is so proud of the excitement and participation in this campaign from everyone who has signed up. This nationwide movement is encouraging Canadians to get active for 30 minutes a day for 30 days. It’s not just about fitness; it’s about fighting the #1 preventable cause of death among Canadian women: heart disease.
Thank you to everyone who came out for the Ottawa Rapid FC game and workout on Sept 7th. It was special to have our CEO Dr. Rob Beanlands on hand for the coin toss along with David Renfro, part owner of the team and Heart Institute patient. This partnership with the team and the CWHHC is fully based on his support. Special thanks to Adam Bracken from The Fit Lab who led the on-field workout and Arboretum Hill Club founder Steven Bierbrier for the halftime movement fun.
It was a perfect example of what JUMP IN™ is all about: showing up, getting active, and celebrating together.
We look forward to a full recap of every event that has happened, but please check out the website for all the upcoming opportunities associated with JUMP IN™. There are still plenty more perks and prizing to go this month with the wrap up party slated for September 30th at Altea Ottawa.

Over the past few weeks there have also been great stories coming out of the Heart Institute and I wanted to be able to share them here as well.

I always look forward to sharing the incredible things happening here at the Institute. I hope it has been a smooth back-to-school transition for your families and that this week all the extra curriculars including sports, tryouts and activities are as seamless. Good Luck! I am soaking in every moment with Jamie as this is her last year of high school and I am already seeing prom dress inspiration pictures. Buckle up! Oh, and one of my favorite things to do in the fall is go apple picking - I’m very excited about this event coming up with Shouldice Farm.
Thank you again for taking the time to read these updates and I do love hearing back from you.
Wishing you good health,
Much Love
Lianne
