There’s been so much to celebrate since my last update, and, in the midst of it, a moment that has stayed with me.
The Institute’s 50th anniversary and the launch of our At the Heart campaign have brought incredible moments, full of energy, connection, and shared passion. Moments that remind us just how much this place means to so many.
But alongside all of it, there has been a loss that’s sat with me differently.
Recently, we lost a donor who wasn’t able to join us at the celebrations. He was one of the first people I had the privilege of getting to know when I joined the Foundation, a kind, thoughtful man who believed deeply in this Institute and was always so grateful for the care he received over his lifetime. There was never a time when we met that he didn’t shed a tear, in gratitude for the time he had been given. A life of no regrets.
Prior to any meeting, I knew his tie and suit had been laid out the night before. His speeches were always printed; every person in the room acknowledged. Small details, but ones I’ll always remember. His family, always by his side, carried that same generosity and spirit.
His passing brought something into sharper focus for me. We often talk about breakthroughs, innovation, and impact. But at its core, what we are really giving people is time. More moments with family. More milestones. More ordinary, extraordinary days. It’s a privilege, and a responsibility I carry with me every day.
Yesterday, we hosted our annual Wilbert Keon Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Service Master at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. While it was a little chilly, the rain held off, and we were treated to glimpses of sunshine that warmed us up every now and then. It was an incredible day for the sold-out event, with $327,000 raised. Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors, committee members, and participants.
Caroline in the Capital was also there to capture the day and has shared a wonderful piece on the tournament. You can read it here.
Also, a big thank you and congratulations as well to our participants that took part in Ottawa Race Weekend. Your dedication, energy, and support helped make this year’s event such a meaningful success.
As we celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday, we send our warmest wishes to all the dads, grandfathers, and father figures in our Heart Institute family.
And now we turn our focus to Jump In for Women’s Heart Health this September. We’ll have more to share soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to highlight a wonderful collaboration with Ottawa Rapid FC. If you’re catching a match this summer, know that a portion of ticket sales is supporting the Institute. Here is the link.
And because I mentioned Jamie’s prom in my last newsletter, I promised an update. Hair and makeup were a success, the dress fit, and while the shoes lasted about five minutes, she was happy. She was aiming for a bit of a James Bond feel, and I think they nailed it. Next up: graduation
